STRAY EGLINS

February 2005

The Eglin Air Force Base in Florida was not named after any of this Eglin Family but after a descendant of a family which came from Switzerland in the mid 1800's

The Following Eglins not yet placed into the family structure

A. William Eglin
The history of the Town of Bleecker in Fulton County by Beers page 212
When Bleecker was divided from the Town of Johnston, one of the early residents was William Eglan having settled here about 1800. The author may have obtained this info from the "Gazetteer of the State of New York by J.H. French published in 1860 and on page 316 "among the early settlers was "Wm. Eglan" (the time frame could suggest a brother to John who was born 1768)
Is he the source of some of these stray Eglins?

B. Charlotte Eglin
1900 census of Ward 5 Gloversville family #125 lists an" Alice" surname illegible who was born April 1856. With her was her daughter Lottie Eglin born May 1877 and a grand daughter Ella Eglin born July 1896. Lottie had been married 7 years ie at about 1893
Alice had 4 other children Edward born Dec 1881, Ella born 1883, Clinten born Feb 1887 and George born July 1891. (The ancestry.com indexer has mistakenly assumed that the surname for all these children as Eglin however I believe that only Lottie and her daughter Ella were surnamed Eglin)

The number of potential husbands for Lottie are limited. One might be Fred Eglin son of Giles.
Fred was born about 1873 but has not been found in the 1900 or later census.
The 1910 census of 2nd ward of Johnston Fulton County lists Claude Hogaboon age 25 as head and Charlotte age 32 wife married 3 years children E. Grace Eglin age 14 stepdaughter and Loeora (Surname unreadable) age 7 Step daughter. Grace was an end puller in a knitting mill and Claude a brusher at Mocha mill.

This family does not fit in with any Eglin family so far researched

F. Thomas Eglin
A special note should be taken of a "Thomas Eglin" Family who appear in the 1850 and 1860 census in Harrison Township Cass County Indiana. While we do not think that family was part of the Eglin Family above the family cannot be completely dismissed at the present time although the family do not fit in with any info obtained so far.

G. Willett Families on North America 2 volumes page 314
